Art has always been a dance between limitation and creativity. Some of the greatest breakthroughs in art have come not from having endless options, but from embracing a limited palette and mastering it. This October, the Willingboro Art Alliance is offering local artists and enthusiasts the chance to do just that through its upcoming Wednesday Workshop: The Zorn Palette – What It Is and How You Can Use It.

What Is the Zorn Palette?
Named after the legendary Swedish artist Anders Zorn, the Zorn Palette is a masterclass in doing more with less. Zorn often worked with just four pigments:
- Yellow ochre
- Ivory black
- Cadmium red light
- Titanium white
At first glance, this might feel restrictive. But in the hands of a skilled artist, these four simple hues can produce an astonishing range of flesh tones, shadows, and atmospheric effects. Zorn himself proved through his portraits and scenes that mastery of a limited palette allows for striking depth, realism, and harmony.
What You’ll Learn
In this workshop, WAA artist Lisa Hendrickson will guide participants through the magic of the Zorn Palette. She’ll begin with a portrait demonstration and then lead hands-on practice in mixing flesh tones with these four essential colors.
Whether you’re a beginner hoping to build a solid foundation or a seasoned artist looking to refine your technique, this session is designed to expand your understanding of color mixing and control.
By the end, you’ll discover:
- How a limited palette simplifies the painting process.
- Techniques for achieving realistic flesh tones.
- How Anders Zorn’s method can bring mood and cohesion to your own work.
